Mercury(II) thiocyanate reacts with chloride into non-ionised but soluble mercury(II) chloride. The resulting thiocyanate reacts with iron (III) into iron(III) thiocyanate. The extinction is measured at 500 nm and is a measure for the quantity of chloride present. |
