In presence of sodium nitroprusside as catalyst, the ammonium with hypochlorite ions and salicylate at pH 12.6 will form a blue/green coloured indol compound. The hypochlorite ions are formed in situ by alkaline hydrolysis of sodium dichloroiso cyanurate. The extinction at 660 nm is a measure for the ammonium content. Sodium citrate is used to mask interfering cations. |
