Dissolved oxygen reacts in an alkaline environment with manganese(II) ions by forming manganese hydroxides with higher valences, of which the composition varies. In a highly acidic environment these form manganese(III) ions, which free from the added iodide solution a quantity of iodine equivalent to the dissolved oxygen. The resulting iodine is titrated with thiosulphate. |
